Tree native to the subtropical slopes of the Peruvian or Colombian Andes as far as Ecuador.
From there it was distributed to other parts of South America; Spanish colonists took it upon themselves to take the seeds of this fruit tree to the Far East. About 2,800 ha of this fruit tree thrive very well on the southern Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula.
It is a small, erect and sprawling tree that reaches a height of 7.5 meters at maturity. The leaves are oval to ovate-lanceolate, about 10-25 cm long, smooth on the upper surface and velvety pubescent on the underside.
The flowers are solitary or in groups of two or three, hanging down on short peduncles. These are long, about 2.5 cm long, pubescent, copper-brown or yellowish in color. The outer petals are fleshy, and the inner ones are small, scale-shaped.
The fruit has a conical or heart-shaped shape, with a soft and more or less thin skin, light green in color, with some depressions in the form of scales or traces that give it a reticulated appearance and become darker during maturation.
The flesh is creamy and white, soft, acidic and has a delicious flavor. The seeds can be packed in a kind of shirt or not, depending on the variety, they are easily extracted and are approximately 1 cm long, brown to black in color.
Annoneira grows in frost-free regions with a subtropical climate. To obtain quality fruits it is necessary to water in the south of the Iberian Peninsula. This tree adapts very well to any type of soil as long as it has good drainage, although it prefers clayey soils.
