There are varieties intended for technical and commercial cultivation. The main characteristics of these varieties are excellent transportability and long shelf life. The Pink Lady apple variety belongs to exactly these varieties.

Variety creation history

In 1979, Australian breeder L. Crips introduced a new late-ripening apple variety. The Golden Delicious and Lady Williams varieties were taken as a basis. The resulting hybrid was called Pink Lady. On the market, seedlings can be found with both names.

The thermophilic plant first gained popularity in Australia, England and the western part of Europe.

Variety description

A feature of this variety is that the hybrid is very thermophilic. The apple tree will not be able to acclimatize in all regions. The tree grows only up to 2.5-3 m, belongs to semi-dwarf crops. Gardeners often grow the variety on dwarf rootstocks.

The crown is conical, but its shape can be different: here a lot depends on the initial formation of the crown. Abundant thickening of the branches. The skeletal branches are thick and curved. The lower ones extend from the trunk at an acute angle, and those that grow at the top - at a right angle. The tree is of medium growth. Since they are small, the seedlings are planted at a distance of 0.5-1 m from each other.

The flowers are large, 5 cm in diameter, have 4 petals on the flower, during the period of full maturity they acquire an intense pink color.

Features, pros and cons

The positive aspects include the fact that the fruits stand out for their good transportability. This is the most important characteristic of the hybrid. A stable, annual harvest is noted, the compactness of the crown, which is convenient for care and pruning. Many gardeners also note the good taste of the fruit.

The disadvantages include the fact that the apple tree cannot survive very severe frosts. Therefore, the growing region is not particularly extensive. Fruiting occurs only for 15 years.

Ripening and fruiting

The variety belongs to the late winter varieties. Flowering begins in May, but harvesting takes place in several stages. The first wave occurs at the end of September. The apples are a little green, but ready to eat. Removable maturity occurs in mid-November.

Production

For a semi-dwarf tree, the yield of the Pink Lady apple tree is very high. From one tree you can remove 30 to 50 kg of apples.

Fruits and their flavor

The fruits are round-conical in shape. In weight, it is 180-200 g. Due to the color of the apples during ripening, they are yellowish-green, but when they are fully ripe, they acquire a characteristic pinkish blush. It can turn into a rich dark red tone.

The peel, although dense, is still thin. Gloss is present on the surface, and a waxy coating can also be found. The pulp is juicy, soft, slightly dense. In terms of flavor, apples are dominated by their sugar content, with notes of vanilla and wild berries.

In a properly prepared place, apples can be stored for up to 8-9 months.

Care

Planting apple trees is a very important, troublesome and responsible action. Its survival and full fruition depend on the correct procedure. Before planting, you need to choose the right planting material, determine the location and prepare the soil.

Along with the necessary top dressing and pruning for apple trees, watering is also a significant contribution to the correct development of the crop and therefore to a high yield. Inadequate watering, carried out inopportunely, without enough water, can cause major problems for the fruit tree.

An important point when caring for an apple tree in the open field is feeding and fertilizing. Apple tree topping begins in early spring and ends in late autumn. Lack of nutrition not only leads to a decrease in the quality and quantity of the harvest, but also reduces the tree's immunity, making it more vulnerable to pests and diseases. And with the autumn procedure, the tree will be able to give more fruit shoots, which will have a positive effect on the future harvest.

The flowers of the Pink Lady apple tree are sterile, therefore it is necessary to plant pollinators on the site with the same maturation periods as this one. These can be varieties likegolden or Gala. Many gardeners emphasize that planting at least two pollinator varieties is essential for better pollination.
