Calathea 'Medallion'
 
Calatheas are attractive plants known for their boldly patterned foliage. The leaves of most Calathea varieties fold slightly overnight, revealing the often colorful undersides of their striking leaves.
They are considered relatively easy to care for, but they like an environment with higher humidity (such as a kitchen or bathroom) and their soil should remain consistently moist.
 
Most Calathea varieties are pet friendly!
 
CARE
 
LIGHT
 Calathea Medallion prefers medium to bright indirect light, but will tolerate low light situations. Never allow this plant to be exposed to direct sunlight - the leaves will get sunburned!
 
WATER
Water the Calathea when the top 25% of the soil is dry. Water until liquid flows out of the drain hole in the bottom of the pot, and discard any water that has pooled in the dish.
 
HUMIDITY
Like many tropical indoor plants, your Calathea prefers a location with high humidity.
If the edges of the leaves begin to curl or brown, spray them with warm water regularly, use a pebble tray, or place a humidifier nearby.
The bathroom or kitchen are perfect places for this plant, as these areas tend to be more humid.
 
TEMPERATURE
Calathea Medallion likes heat, preferably between 18 and 28º C, so keep indoor temperatures above 15/16º C. Avoid cold drafts and sudden changes in temperature.
 
FERTILIZATION
For best results, use a general houseplant fertilizer with iron every four weeks during spring and summer. No fertilizer is needed for the winter when plant growth naturally slows down.
 
TOXICITY
Calatheas are non-poisonous plants and are safe for humans, cats and dogs.
 
ADDITIONAL CARE
If you notice that one tip or edges of your Calathea are burnt, often with a yellowish tinge, it could be due to tap water. To solve this, use distilled water, rainwater, or let tap water sit overnight before watering so the chlorine and fluoride can evaporate. Remove all yellow leaves to keep your plant strong and growing. Do not use any shine products on the leaves, instead wipe the leaves occasionally with a damp cloth.
