Light

Calathea needs a lot of diffused light. Direct sunlight will cause the leaves to discolor and lose their characteristic markings. They can tolerate some degree of shade, but the more indirect light, the thinner the foliage will be.

RegisterThe

Calathea should be kept in moist soil at all times, but don't allow the plant to be in water or in very soggy soil. Water 'slightly and often' as an irrigation policy.

Temperature

Prefers warm to hot temperatures, ideally between 18-23°C, but can handle temperatures as low as 15°C. Avoid drafts and ensure the plant has reasonable ventilation.

Humidity

High humidity levels are a must. Spray frequently to improve humidity conditions and place it near the shower every now and then for an extra boost.

Fertilizing

Apply a light dose of a nitrogen-rich green plant fertilizer once or twice a month during the growing season.

Height and Growth Rate

Calathea is a moderately fast growing plant, reaching heights of around 40 cm to 60 cm.

Origin

Calathea originates from the Tropical Americas.
