Cycas Rumphii

This cycadacea is a small tree, growing to about 10 m in height, with a trunk diameter of up to 400 mm. The bark is gray and distinctly fissured into rectangular or diamond-shaped segments. Leaves grow from the crown - shiny, glossy, palm-like fronds, 1.5-2.5 m long, with 150-200 mm leaflets on each frond. The spiny petiole is 350-600 mm long.

 

The male plant's strobe, or cone, is oblong-ellipsoidal, 300 to 600 mm long, orange in color, and faint in odor. The female's megasporophylls are about 300 mm long, fleshy, brown and densely hairy, with the fertile area about 35 mm wide. Seeds are 45 mm long and 30 mm wide, mature green to orange or reddish brown.
